WESTPORT – The search for a missing snowmobiler ended in tragedy on Monday when the body of Scott McPherson was recovered from a lake.
OPP divers found the body of McPherson, 33, in Sand Lake, near Westport. Police assume his snowmobile crashed through the ice.
McPherson was reported missing on Saturday when he failed to return from a snowmobiling jaunt. Rideau Lakes OPP called in its Underwater Search and Recovery Unit along with the OPP’s Emergency Response Team, the OPP Snowmobile ATV Vessel Enforcement Team, the Rideau Lakes Fire Service with ATV support and OPP drones to assist in the search.
The OPP urges everyone to stay off the ice, whether snowmobiling or on foot.
No ice is “safe ice,” police say. Underlying water currents or air pockets can create thin ice, even in the coldest temperatures. Snowmobilers can’t see this until it’s too late. If it can’t be avoided, check ice conditions beforehand, wear a floater suit, carry ice picks and make sure they are accessible. Always be prepared and travel with safety equipment in the event of an emergency.
