The wall on the north side of the building at 10 Market St. W. has been power-washed and a base coat of paint will be applied in the next few days to allow the mural artists to go to work.

Guy Wales, designer of the mural, will lead a team of fellow artists to paint the mural in a process that could take months, depending on weather and other factors.

Wales, a member of the Brockville Walls Project, has designed a work of art that will provide a 3D view of the Brockville marina like looking through the tourism office as if it wasn’t there. It will be framed by painted stones similar to those at city hall across the street, and real lighting will be installed in the wall.

The existing electronic billboard will remain and the far west side of the building will have a changeable section that can be used to promote city attractions and events.

Katherine Hobbs, manager of the Chamber of Commerce’s Brockville Tourism Office, said the wall will be “instagram-able” and shared over the social-media platform.

Hobbs said the Tourism Office wanted a mural that would honour the historic downtown area and allow people to fit in with the mural.

“We were just wowed when we saw Guy’s design,” Hobbs said. “We thought that it fits what the city would require for the historic district and allow people to be part of the mural.”

Money for the mural will come out of a $98,000 FedDev Ontario grant that Brockville Tourism received to promote and market the city. Hobbs estimated the mural will cost around $25,000.

Hobbs said the money will help to support local artists, who have had their already meager incomes slashed by COVID-19. The money spent on supplies, electricians and other local workers will also help the Brockville economy, she said.
