A professor at Arizona State who often took to Twitter to rail on social justice issues and was believed to be dead after she chronicled her battle with COVID-19 was a made-up story, the perpetrator admitted.
BethAnn McLaughlin, who announced the fictitious professor’s death on July 31, came clean by telling The New York Times she was the mastermind behind the hoax.
“I take full responsibility for my involvement in creating the @sciencing_bi Twitter account,” she said in a statement through her lawyer.
“My actions are inexcusable. I apologize without reservation to all the people I hurt.”
