University of Regina Rams linebacker Robbie Lowes was flying high after learning Monday that U Sports has made a one-year exception to its age limit regarding football players.
The original ruling, made in light of the cancellation of all fall sports due to COVID-19, had adversely affected players — Lowes being among the notable ones — who turn 25 before Sept. 1 of next year.
“I’m ecstatic,” said Lowes, who was to complete his fifth year in 2020, only to have the pandemic change everything.
“It’s also a feeling of disbelief with the rollercoaster of 2020 and the way things have been going. You come to expect the worst every now and again and this is just a breath of fresh air.”
The worst came for Lowes earlier this month when U Sports also announced that it was it was maintaining the age cap for football. That meant players who were over 25 as of Sept. 1 were deemed to have aged out of their intercollegiate sports eligibility.
