It was championship night at St. Mary Catholic High School on Thursday.
The Brockville school hosted the girls basketball A finals. The second game of the evening that pitted the senior Crusaders against Rideau proved to be an instant classic and much closer than many of the fans in the stands might have been expecting.
St. Mary led 28-23 after three quarters. The Lions got to within one point of the Crusaders in the fourth quarter and had several shots at tying the game or taking the lead in the last couple of minutes of regulation. There were repeated chants of “de-fence” coming from the St. Mary bench. With Rideau down 33-30 and pressing in the St. Mary end, Elise Plaschka got the steal with less than 25 seconds on the clock and then Crusader teammate Olivia Oseghale was fouled in the Lions end. Most of the crowd and the Crusaders bench erupted when she drained both of her free throws to put away the game for the home team.
