They were pushed to the limit, but the Lions’ pride came through in the end.

The Rideau District High School Lions won the Leeds Grenville (LGSSAA) senior boys A volleyball championship on Wednesday afternoon. The host Lions defeated the Gananoque Trojans in a five-set thriller in Elgin.

Rideau won the first two sets of the best-of-five final by scores of 25-19 and 25-15, but Gananoque stormed back to take the third game 25-14. The fourth set was much closer; the senior Trojans prevailed 25-23. Gananoque scored the first point of the fifth and deciding set, and it was tied 3-3 when Rideau gained the lead and never gave it back. The Lions went on to win 15-8 and claim the local title.

“It was a good match,” said Rideau coach Chris Hartley. “Both teams kind of rose to the occasion. I think they both brought their A games.”

Lions player Hunter Bresee indicated that the team was off its game after the second set victory. In the huddle before the final set, the Rideau squad talked about playing the way they had been playing and know how to play.

“We knew what we could do, and we did it,” Bresee said.

Rideau had advanced to the final by overcoming a first-set loss to South Grenville and winning their semi-final match with the Giants. Gananoque defeated St. Mary in the other semi-final; last year’s Crusaders team captured the Leeds Grenville title and went on to win EOSSAA.

By winning the LGSSAA title, Rideau advances to the senior boys A Eastern Ontario (EOSSAA) championships to be held in Renfrew on Thursday, Nov. 14.

“I’m excited, and I know we can do well there,” Bresee commented.

Following the senior final, the St. Mary Crusaders defeated Gananoque in the Leeds Grenville junior final. Rideau will host the junior A Eastern Ontario (EOSSAA) championships next Wednesday.

The LGSSAA boys volleyball AA playoffs were held at St. Michael in Kemptville on Wednesday. The host Mustangs defeated TISS to win the senior title. TISS won the Leeds Grenville junior championship.
