South Grenville District High School announced its 2019- 2020 athletic award recipients on Facebook recently. The Prescott school named senior and junior athletes of the year as well as the students receiving honours in individual sports.

The COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing closure of schools led to the cancellation of the spring sports season and prevented South Grenville and other high schools from holding athletic award events in person.

The Senior Girl Athlete of the Year for 2019-2020 is Helene Bygott, who played on the basketball and volleyball teams and “represented South Grenville with pride and commitment.”

Bygott was described by her coaches as being a quiet leader and positive role model who was passionate and a great teammate. The all-star demonstrated “a relentless pursuit of excellence” and a diligent work ethic to become a top-level athlete.

Joe Morasse is South Grenville’s Senior Boy Athlete of the Year. He led as centre of the volleyball team and was a main contributor to the basketball team, helping both squads have successful seasons in 2019-2020.

Morasse displayed sportsmanship and was described as a fantastic teammate who was always encouraging others and whose leadership skills were evident on and off the court.

Bryanna Jupe is the school’s Junior Girl Athlete of the Year; Hunter Sanger is the Junior Boy Athlete of 2019- 2020 at South Grenville.

Short videos announcing each of the Giants’ athletes of the year recipients are posted on YouTube.
